If you want to see textbook red pill wife-from-hell-the-state-works-for-me-pay-up-sucka behavior, watch Arbitrage, 2012 with Gere. Sarandon lays it down neatly in the penultimate scene. I might be wrong, but I believe we are *supposed* to sympathize with her, because Gere was treating his daughter (also his CIO) as an employee and a professional peer, not a delicate princess. But according to daughter and mommie, she was supposed to be both Gere’s business partner and his Disney princess, insulated from any hardship or unpleasant reality. (I might be wrong because I am incapable of enjoying any of Sarandon’s work.) Mommie says (spoiler alert, and this is a paraphrase): “Pay me, or I drop a dime and you’re wearing orange jumpsuits.” End credits.
Again, what I find fascinating is that Sarandon’s actions are of the ‘you go gurl!’ variety, if I read this scene correctly. She’s supposed to be an admirable figure, long-suffering, wise to Gere’s boyish ways, and ruthlessly correct in giving him the shiv now. She offers him the choice of jail or penury: She says, “Sign over 100% of our assets to me, so I may maintain my position in my charities, or you are going to jail.” And he does. And we are supposed to be impressed with her. I guess she tamed the beast.
Now, Gere is disturbing, in his narcissism and recklessness. I know people like his character. They’re disturbing. From time to time you want to kill them. But Sarandon exploits the very qualities Gere offers to achieve a social strata she couldn’t have spotted with a 10x scope. Then she wipes him out.
